I'm Lorena, a licensed psychologist. Prior to starting my own practice, I was a psychologist in a group practice in North Durham. Before moving to the area, I was a staff psychologist at East Carolina University’s counseling center working with college students struggling with a variety of issues such as adjustment, depression, anxiety, relationship and family stressors.

I received a B.S. in Psychology from University of Texas – Pan American, M.A. in Clinical Psychology from University of Houston – Clear Lake, and Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in Counseling Psychology. I completed my internship at the University of South Carolina’s counseling center and then joined USC’s Sexual Health and Violence Prevention office, working with college students who experienced sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, and GLBT stressors.

Currently, I work with adults, ages 18 and up, either individually or sometimes as a couple. Although my early experience has focused on sexual trauma, sexual health, and relationship stressors, I enjoy and have experience in a variety of adult issues. My therapeutic style is supportive, while focusing on client’s strengths. I approach clients with the belief that “everyone is doing the very best they can at any given moment”. I also use practical cognitive behavioral interventions and encourage clients to be advocates for their needs and goals in counseling.

Whether you have been in counseling before, or are new to the process, I want you to know that it is all up to you. I use the first session as an opportunity for us to get to know each other, then we make a decision together about what is best for you. So, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to share them.
